Fourth Graders Step Back in Time at Museum Village
The SAR Academy fourth graders traveled to Monroe, NY, for an exciting visit to Museum Village, where they got a firsthand glimpse of life in the 18th and 19th centuries. This interactive adventure allowed the students to experience history in a fun and engaging way.
During their tour, the students tried a variety of hands-on projects, including dipping candles, making paper flowers, and playing with old-fashioned toys like hoops and stilts. In the one-room schoolhouse, they were amazed to learn that students of all ages and grades learned together, tackling arithmetic, spelling, and writing. The school year lasted only 12 weeks, from Thanksgiving to early spring, because most local children spent the rest of the year working on family farms.
At the blacksmith shop, the students watched a skilled blacksmith at work, learning that metal is heated to 2,000 degrees to shape it into tools and horseshoes! In the apothecary, they were fascinated by the authentic herbs, bottles, healthcare tools, eyeglasses, and even a soda fountain on display.
It was an eye-opening experience that brought history to life.
