Learning at SAR
SAR is dedicated to the philosophy that every child possesses a divine spark, has unique worth as an individual, and should be encouraged to achieve according to his or her ability. Students are guided to take risks, to be creative, and to develop their academic skills. We believe learning happens both in and out of the classroom and open our students’ minds to history, literature, math, science, tefillah, gemara, and medinat yisrael – all through the lens of torah. Our learning environment promotes an open thinking, boundless energy, and a warm, inclusive atmosphere.
ELC
At the Early Learning Center (ELC), SAR’s school for children ages 2-6, we create a joyous and loving Jewish environment filled with experiential learning, passionate and nurturing teachers, Hebrew immersion, and STEAM-focused curricula.
Academy
In grades 1-8, we open our students’ minds to history, literature, math, science, tefillah, Medinat Yisrael–all through the lens of Torah. We nurture in our children the understanding that Torah informs who we are in all of our interactions, and how we hold ourselves in the world.

October 7 was a meaningful and emotional day at SAR, as we came together in Read moreschool and as a broader Riverdale community to remember, reflect, and stand together.
Three years later, we continue to bear witness, honor the lives lost, hold close the families forever changed, and reaffirm our unwavering connection to Israel and one another.
It was an important day of remembrance, reflection, and community, reminding us of the strength we find in being together.

When we stood together on the steps to commemorate October 7th, we understood Read morethat at moments like this, sometimes only silence can hold what words cannot. Silence to honor what was lost, to recognize what remains, and to sit with what we still cannot understand. Three years later, all three are still true.
We honored our chayalim, including teachers and members of our own SAR community, who have served. We welcomed Tomer Meir and Millet Ben Shabat, survivors of the Nova Music Festival. Tomer, a paratrooper and medic, had gone to Nova to celebrate finishing his army service. Millet hid in an open field for six hours, sending her family a message of love as her phone battery died. Both lost friends that day. Millet lost her cousin. They shared their stories with middle and high school students asking them to remember the people who helped, the ones who bravely came back for people over two days, and saved lives, and to let that gratitude shape how we act every day.

Freshman Day at Glen Island Park broughtRead more our ninth graders together for team-building, chesed, and plenty of fun. Each student added a hexagon with their name to a shared mural. Just as the hexagons of a honeycomb fit together to build a hive, each student helps shape our SAR family. A reminder that everyone belongs and has something special to contribute.

On October 7, Millet Ben Read moreShabat went to Nova to dance with her friends but ended up in the brush, only to be rescued six hours later. On the third anniversary of October 7, Millet asked our students to remember that "alongside the darkness of that day, there was light: the people who helped, who saved lives, who stood by us as friends."

Our senior class was invited by the Israeli Embassy for a special commemorationRead more for October 7 at the U.N. The program, “Rise, Recover, Rebuild” featured inspirational remarks by Ambassador Danny Danon and a harrowing firsthand account by the tazpitanit, Oriya Berlin. We were privileged to hear the hopeful message of Eliya Cohen and Ziv Aboud, who survived the Nova massacre. Eliya was taken hostage in Gaza and after his release he reunited with Ziv and they were married just two weeks ago.
This was a powerful and meaningful experience that our students will carry with them as we remember the October 7th massacre.
