SAR High School students visited TAPCo High School to launch this year’s Read moreTAPCo-SAR Bridges Program, finding common ground and learning about one another through conversations about food, music, holidays, and everyday life.
Laughter over lunchtime games of Anomia and Anarchy Pancakes kept the conversations going. A Hexagonal Thinking activity brought their New York experiences into the mix, connecting landmarks, favorite Broadway shows, and the places that make the city feel like home.
One visit, plenty to talk about, and a whole year ahead to build friendships through a shared love of the arts and NYC!
Next week, the SAR Chesed Tent opens.
In Parashat Vayera, Avraham and Read moreSarah kept their tent open to anyone who needed it. From Monday, October 26 to Friday, October 30, every grade from 2N to 8th will visit the Chesed Tent and do the same, with chesed projects for KCI Food Pantry, Elie Ruby Foundation, Knock Knock Give a Sock, Sharsheret, Meals on Wheels, Tomchei Shabbos, and more.
Families can join in - volunteer and support Chesed Week! Plus our 7th and 8th graders are packaging and selling pink flowers for Sharsheret and chulent bags for Tomchei Shabbos of Queens, just in time for Shabbat.

Today our 8th graders held 320 names in their hands, and SAR has committed to Read moregiving each one a home.
A few weeks ago, Fred Smith was walking through Kingsbridge, just minutes from SAR, and passed the building where he went to shul as a boy. The Kingsbridge Center of Israel is becoming a church. He asked the pastor if he could come in, and when he did, he saw the memorial plaques were still on the wall, right where Fred remembered them. About 320 of them.
Every one of those plaques was put up by a family. Each one marks a yahrzeit, the day a name is said aloud and a bulb attached to that plaque is lit. When a shul closes, those names can go quiet.
Fred and fellow former member Richard Baum decided that would not happen. Together they are trying to return every plaque to its family. Richard has been translating each Hebrew name into English.
Today our 8th graders helped them sort and catalog the plaques one by one. Our students handled the plaques, and the importance of the task at hand, with real care, understanding that each one holds the memory of someone who was loved.
Our theme this year is עֵת לְדַבֵּר, a time to speak. Sometimes that means speaking up. Sometimes it means making sure a name is spoken again.
SAR has committed to helping finish this work. Where we can find a family, the plaque goes home. Where we can’t, we’ll help find a shul that will give it a place on its wall.

Game inventor Eyal Buchnik shared the board game "The Knesset: Master the Read moreChaos of Israeli Politics" with our 8th graders and walked them through how Israeli democracy works: the parties, the issues at stake, the electoral system and the hard work of building a coalition when no single party wins a majority.
The students weren't playing to back any particular party, they learned how the process works and why it can be so hard to govern a country with so many voices.
With Israelis heading to the polls this month, our students have a much better sense of what that vote involves.

Our Rosh Chodesh chagigah set the tone for the year ahead with unstoppable Read moreenergy and ruach! Students across all grades danced together with an ease that felt like family, while faculty brought every bit as much spirit as our students.
Our love for Medinat Yisrael filled the room, strengthening the sense of connection and purpose we share.

October 7 was a meaningful and emotional day at SAR, as we came together in Read moreschool and as a broader Riverdale community to remember, reflect, and stand together.
Three years later, we continue to bear witness, honor the lives lost, hold close the families forever changed, and reaffirm our unwavering connection to Israel and one another.
It was an important day of remembrance, reflection, and community, reminding us of the strength we find in being together.
